Movie Review: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

Sam Raimi’s highly mobile camera (developed originally for “The Evil Dead”) gave viewers the feeling of swinging through New York like Spider-Man himself. Sam Raimi’s highly mobile camera, which was first developed for “The Evil Dead”, gave viewers a virtual experience of swinging around New York as Spider-Man. In subsequent films, the feelings of Iron Man’s flight and Captain America’s battle were portrayed. Doctor Strange’s alteration of reality and time was also portrayed. With Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi returns with a narratively wobbly but visually stunning tale of selves. fears, bodies, and yearning.

Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch in ” Power of the Dog“) is first introduced. He’s suffering from a variety of problems, including regrets about his failed relationship Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams in ” disobedience“), and dreams of a teenager with incredible power and a monster who drains energy. When the girl appears, things get, well, weird. Strange faces, monsters, witchcraft and sorcery clash and familiar/unknown faces appear. Strange, who is being pursued by a malevolent force that has a clear agenda to harm America Chavez (Xochitl, Gomez from “Roped”) must use his abilities and overcome his fears in order to save everyone around him.

Doctor Strange made his first appearance in 2016 in ” Doctor Strange,” however, this is the sixth time he has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cumberbatch’s Strange is a continuation of the previous films, with a tinge of regret for his life that was left behind. It’s still arrogant, but this time it seems more like an act. The real Strange, who is more vulnerable and wounded, comes out when people close to him confront him. The most impressive of these is Benedict Wong as Wong (Annihilation), whose worldweariness and exasperation can be a nice foil to Strange’s flippancy. McAdams as Palmer, who was under-utilized in the first film, is now a significant character in terms of both personal and multidimensional stakes. Palmer and Strange are faced with some significant challenges, and Palmer shows that intelligence and quick wits can be just as valuable as sorcery in a difficult situation. Xochitl Gómez portrays America Chavez as a teenager whose abilities cause major trouble. She conveys a compelling sense of being out-of-control, wanting to go home, but also afraid to be with others. America and Strange is constantly asked what it can do and should do. While the answer might not be very surprising, there’s still a lot of drama in this answer. Michael Waldron, the screenwriter of America and Strange, explores comic book lore within a multiverse setting. This leads to some interesting cameos. These cameos may recall previous films or point to the MCU’s future, but they are likely to be a bit of fan service for those who don’t follow the MCU.

Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch / Wanda Maximoff in the film (” Ingrid goes West“) is the star of the movie. Wanda, like Strange, has appeared in many MCU films but only once as the main character. Before watching the film, viewers are encouraged to watch “WandaVision”, as Wanda’s emotional journey is influenced by this previous Marvel production. Wanda’s emotional arc is influenced by the previous Marvel film “WandaVision”. Her yearning and trauma are understandable, even though her actions might raise questions. Olsen is able to portray different versions of Wanda, each of which has its own distinct personality. This allows the film to explore how love can motivate people to act in a way that is influenced by compassion and fear. This exploration continues with different versions of established characters, but Wanda’s desperate pursuit provides the film with an emotional core and a pleasing ambivalence.

The movie can also be viewed with ambivalence. The script has recurring flaws, such as the narrative details being clarified too fast or not given enough weight despite potentially heavy subject matters. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness does not benefit from existential discussions. However, previous Marvel films like ” Avengers Infinity War ” and ” Black Panther ” struck a better balance between emotion and spectacle. Raimi makes the most of Marvel Studios’ and the multiverse’s opportunities to create a spectacular film. Raimi and cinematographer John Mathieson take the viewer on some wild rides as they swoop through objects, portals, and universes. In a spectacular sequence, Strange is split into cuboid pieces as he falls through multiple universes. The editors Bob Murawski & Tia Nolan weave the flashes into the plot, beautifully framed by the production design by Md Joni & Charles Wood. Other spectacles include a battle between Strange and Wong against a tentacled monster, a magical fight at Kamar-Taj with multiple sorcerers and a musical duel that is absolutely jaw-dropping. Raimi, composer Danny Elfman and the VFX crew present combatants which not only deliver the blows and the missiles, but also provide the score for their duel. Marvel films can be criticized as being formulaic. But sequences such as this one show the creativity and innovation that Raimi, along with Danny Elfman, can use.

Raimi incorporates his horror experience as many fans hoped. The film has some moments of (sanitized), body horror and genuine jump scares. It also features hellish spirits, which is the closest thing we’ll get to seeing “Marvel Zombies” in live action. The uncontrollable, whether it is within or outside of one’s own body, can be frightening. And the damage that some characters suffer is visible on their bodies and souls. This film can incorporate this element along with so many other aspects, even if they are to different effects. While Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness may be a patchy movie, its adventure through the multiverse is just what the doctor ordered.
